Reducing emissions from heritage buildings

Help to make historically important buildings energy efficient while retaining their character by using this new guide.

Low Carbon Heritage Buildings: a guide’ has been produced to help people across Yorkshire and Humber sensitively introduce changes to historically important buildings that improves their environmental performance.

Building on current English Heritage advice and Planning Policy Statement 5, the guide sets out a systematic process to help you understand how your building is used, where emissions come from and what to do to cut those emissions.

Taking your through a series of investigations, the guide will changes that when implemented will protect what makes your building special in the first place, while making it more efficient. You’ll reap the benefits of cheaper running costs and reduced carbon emissions.

Five case studies come with the guide to show how changes can be implemented to reduce emissions without destroying historical value. The case studies include a mill, school, commercial building, cottage and gallery so a range of typical issues are covered and can be applied in many circumstances.

If you want to carry out routine maintenance, are planning major renovations or restoration or are just interested in saving money, use the guide and case studies to kick start your low carbon journey.

Funded by YoHr Space – the region’s Improvement and Efficiency Partnership, the guide and case studies were produced by Arup on behalf of Kirklees Council and Leeds City Council.
