Renewable Energy & Local Opportunities

The event report is published along with all presentations following our lively event - Renewable Energy & Local Opportunities - held in York on 4 July. An exciting line-up of speakers from government, industry and local government explored the costs, benefits, impacts and opportunities of renewable energy. They were:

  • Hugh Ellis (TCPA) and Chair for the day
  • Rt. Hon Ed Davey - video message
  • Elin Williams (DECC)
  • Andy Nolan (Sheffield City Council)
  • Stewart Provan (Banks Renewables)
  • Richard Barnard (RSPB)
  • Alastair Smith (Wind Prospect)

The event aimed to improve understanding in order to enable positive and proactive action to be taken that recognises the needs of local areas. We considered community benefit schemes already in operation, looked at local case studies and heard first hand from the developers' perspective on the challenges of seeing projects through from concept to completion.

The full set of presentations from the day are also available to download from this page.

Background

The UK is legally committed to meeting 15% of energy demand from renewable sources by 2020. Achieving this will help meet the UK's energy security and carbon reduction objectives. Your Climate in partnership with Climate UK were commissioned by the Department of Energy & Climate Change to host this event as part of a wider series across the country. Events explored how local authorities can be supported to take positive and proactive action on renewable energy, in particular onshore wind, in the context of localism and the National Planning and Policy Framework.
