A new resource for practitioners involved with the maintenance and development of the local highway network in a changing climate has been published by Climate UK. 'Creating & Managing Resilient Local Highways' follows the successful event in Wakefield presented by Your Climate, in association with Climate UK and national partners, including the Department for Transport and ADEPT that was aimed at local authority elected members, service managers and officers from highways engineering, maintenance, street services, strategic planning, regeneration, environment and sustainability.

Local Health & Wellbeing in a Changing Climate

Your Climate and Climate North East jointly hosted a workshop in York on 5 March to explore the health implications of a changing climate and how partners can work together to improve health outcomes through the new arrangements for the NHS and public health. Presentations from the day and links to resources to help organisations adapt are now available to view on-line and download from the Your Climate website.

Climate Disadvantage - What are the social impacts of climate change?

Disadvantaged people and communities can be disproportionately affected by climate change. This landmark event will examine the links between climate change and poverty, help to identify the interdependancies and explore ways to understand and improve our responses through climate change adaptation policy and practice.

David Walker (Deputy Chief Medical Officer) heads up our list of speakers to present the case for integrating climate change adaptation into Joint Strategic Needs Assessments (JSNAs) and local Health and Wellbeing Strategies.

Your Climate and Climate North East will jointly be hosting this special half day event on the morning of 28 February 2014 in York to support the launch of a new health and social care adaptation toolkit called 'Under the Weather'.

National Adaptation Plan pubished on 1st July

On 1 July the government laid the first National Adaptation Programme before Parliament in line with a commitment set out in the Climate Change Act 2008. The Programme builds upon the evidence presented in the UK Climate Change Risk Assessment, published in January 2012, and sets out government’s objectives, policies and proposals for addressing the risks identified.

This new report published by the Health Protection Agency compliments and builds on the evidence in the Health Sector report from the UK Climate Change Risk Assessment by providing scientific evidence of the wider health risks from climate change in the UK. The report was presented at the recent Your Climate / Climate North East conference 'Local Health & Wellbeing in changing climate' and is available to download directly from the HPA's website. (Please note that the HPA will become Health Protection England on 1st April).

Yorkshire Ambulance Service is looking to apply for foundation trust status in 2012. NHS foundation trusts are membership organisations that are free from central government control. This means that the new organisation will have a lot more freedom to shape the way that it provides and develops services for local residents.

They have developed plans for how they would like to take the new organisation forward in the future. However, they want to be sure that you have a say in what they are proposing.

Livewell: a balance of healthy and sustainable food choices

WWF has released its Livewell report, that looks at whether it is possible to eat a diet that is both lower in GHG emissions and more nutritionally balanced than current dietary norms in the UK.

WWF-UK's One Planet Food Programme (2009-12) has set goals to reduce UK food-consumption related emissions by at least 25% by 2020 and by 70% by 2050, based on 1990 emission levels.
