Health Effects of Climate Change in the UK 2012

This new report published by the Health Protection Agency compliments and builds on the evidence in the Health Sector report from the UK Climate Change Risk Assessment by providing scientific evidence of the wider health risks from climate change in the UK. The report was presented at the recent Your Climate / Climate North East conference 'Local Health & Wellbeing in changing climate' and is available to download directly from the HPA's website. (Please note that the HPA will become Health Protection England on 1st April).

Solar Power Feed-in Tariffs

A joint report on the solar power feed-in tariffs has been published by the Energy and Climate Change and Environment Audit Select Committees. The report criticises the Government’s handling of the proposed changes to FiTs, which it says could have a fatal impact on the solar industry. Tim Yeo MP, Chair of the Energy and Climate Change Committee, said "There is no question that solar subsidies needed to be urgently reduced, but the Government has handled this clumsily.”

Local authority Leaders and Chief Executives recognised the critical importance of managing the risks and opportunities associated with climate change in Yorkshire and Humber and agreed a programme of work that commenced in February 2009. Bee Buddies is a buzzing success

Sheffield’s air is abuzz with 2 million honeybees introduced by our Bee Buddies project. The 12 month project set out to address the dramatic decline in UK honey bee numbers over the last few years. The British Beekeepers’ Association estimate that one-third of all honeybee colonies were lost last year, and that if positive action is not taken immediately, Britain’s honeybees will disappear by 2018.

£3 million of new funding from CO2Sense

£3 million of new funding is available from CO2Sense to help businesses in Yorkshire and Humber cut their costs and their carbon emissions.

The funding will be available to help businesses to develop a range of low-carbon initiatives, including renewable electricity generation, supplying or using carbon-neutral woodfuel for heating, or for developing products, services and processes that will help to reduce carbon emissions.

An Industrial Strategy for the development of carbon capture and storage across the UK

There are significant opportunities offered by CCS to UK Businesses. Geography alone has huge potential for the UK, with the North Sea offering some of the best storage sites for CO2 in Europe. We also have long-established engineering and project management skills in both fossil fuel power generation and offshore oil and gas, both of which will be required to deliver CCS technically, and the financial and legal expertise to construct the complex business models and contractual arrangements essential to deliver projects.
