On Monday 27th June get the latest news, tips and ideas from the range of innovative climate change projects run by local authorities across Yorkshire and the Humber with funding support from YoHr Space.

The event is a great opportunity to network, hear from a range of colleagues who have delivered YoHr Space projects and to hear more about the legacy for local government improvement.

As part of the Climate Change Skills for Planners programme Your Climate hosted a free event for Local Authority Officers and offers the opportunity to discuss forthcoming planning updates with speakers from Arup, Fortismere Associates, Sean Rendall (ECSC) and Chris Cousins from BRE.

Break out sessions provided a chance for officers to be updated on key climate change challenges and discuss issues relating to planning for climate change with experts to available to answer your questions on viability, energy statements and sustainable construction.

The comprehensive package of climate change and planning training for officers has continued with Climate Change & Viability covered at the latest round of training events.

During October, ‘Module 8: Climate Change and Viability’ showed planners how to implement, monitor and enforce climate change and related policy requirements. Effective monitoring and implementation is essential to ensure that new development meets its full potential to contribute to communities’ mitigation of and adaptation to climate change.

Climate change, landscape and quality of life

Arising from Scottish Natural Heritage's Climate Change Action Plan (pdf), this research assesses the possible implications of climate change on Scotland's landscapes and their contribution to quality of life. The original assessment was updated in 2011 to reflect the United Kingdom Climate Projections 2009 (UKCP09) study. See the research report and appendices (external link).

Heritage Counts 2011

Each year 'Heritage Counts' explores the role of the historic environment in wider social and economic agendas.

'Heritage Counts' is produced on behalf of the Historic Environment Forum. This year it looks at the historic environment and Big Society, introducing new research into the role of heritage in civil society and highlighting our plans for increasing on-going engagement in local heritage issues.

Independent Panel on Forestry Progress Report

On 8 December 2011 the Independent Panel on Forestry published its progress report. The report says the Panel are working towards recommendations that will increase the benefits generated from all forests in England – to the people that enjoy them, to nature and to the businesses that rely on them. Of the woods which are not in the public estate, 80%, only about half of them are managed. The Panel wants to see more woods created and more woods managed.

England’s parks and green spaces are being managed in a context which is changing fast and fundamentally. Councils are being given greater autonomy to determine the services they provide to their communities, but this autonomy comes with significantly reduced resources. So the challenge is to keep going with less money, while safeguarding the service and quality expected by local people.
