Piloting Coastal Adaptation in the East Riding

East Riding council has been successful in its application to become a Coastal Change Pathfinder (Dec 2009).

Through the Pathfinder scheme, just over 1.2 million pounds has been secured from the Department of Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) for the council to develop and test innovative ways to help coastal communities adapt to the issues posed by coastal change.

The overall vision for the East Riding Coastal Adaptation Pathfinder is that innovative approaches can be developed and tested to assist vulnerable and isolated groups in adapting to the pressures caused by coastal change to achieve a level of wellbeing and quality of life.  This will build on existing adaptation best practice, both from the East Riding and nationally.

The Coastal Change Pathfinder is part of the Coastal Change Adaptation Policy, which includes a fund of £11 million for England to trial innovative methods of coastal change adaptation and provide basic assistance for residential properties at risk.  The Government has made this fund available for just over a year.
